Municipalized Trash: It's Uncivilized
After reading this Mises.org post this morning, a few thoughts came to mind about my own personal experience with trash pickup.
I live on the south side of Indianapolis and our trash service has been very unreliable at best. Over the past year there have been 4 or 5 instances where the trash was skipped for a week at a time, or often time they will come days late. To make things worse they consistently leave our trash bins in the street and don't pickup anything they don't like; for instance they won't pick up small boxes unless they are wastefully put into a trash bag.
Now I admit that I have not done any research on the topic but by intuition I can tell you that all Indianapolis area trash is contracted to Ray's Trash. Ray's is a private company, however with the special privileges allotted to them by being the sole company available for trash, the usual problems normally taken care of on a market - namely poor service - have already been shown to follow by my example.
